Press Release | ReadySet

Ready, Set, a group exhibition by Bay Area based artists Brett Flanigan, Heather Day, as well as Milan based artist Martina Merlini makes effort to express the motion of the everyday through dynamic abstracted compositions. Rich layers of texture and pattern create a formal balance that acts as a quickly paced retelling of each artist’s experiences. The exhibition will be on view April 9 to May 6, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, April 9 at 7pm. All artists will be in attendance. To Find out more about available works contact i

BRETT FLANIGAN| Brett Flanigan has a penchant for paradox. His work lies at the crossroads of construction and deconstruction, somehow resonating on both sides. Each work is dualistic in nature. Emotive, raw marks and intuitive forms are often protrusive at first glance, giving way to logic, pattern, and algorithm upon further inspection. These overlapping ideas create work that can be viewed in stereoscopically, where visual hierarchies rise and fall from power throughout the viewing. Flanigan makes no attempt to leave his work at the point of resolution, instead disembarking when it reaches its most energized place, as though it were balancing on top of a hill and a single push could send it plummeting in any direction, a collected depiction of entropy, both rigid and structureless simultaneously.

HEATHER DAY| Heather Day is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Day grew up in Hawaii and along the east coast of the United States, finally moving to San Francisco after graduating from Maryland Institute College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and art history. Her background in travel and culture encouraged her to see more of the world, where she discovered a connection to nature—her main source of inspiration. Day’s art is a form of visual storytelling interested in conveying moments of interactions. Each mark represents her language of dynamic motion, allowing compositions to read like handwriting—from one side to another. Working primarily with paint and non‐traditional materials, her recent work is a reflection of travels in nature. Collected moments from wooded areas, agitated rivers, and panoramic views of the ocean are conveyed through washes of medium and rapid marks. Color is used as punctuation—a means to control the energy and direct the eye. Her process demands motion, requiring the entire body, not just the hand. Each painting seeks to balance the progression of growth and upkeep found in both nature and the act of painting. She works primarily with paint and non‐traditional materials, and is known for her murals. The philosophy that everything is a product of an experience frames each work, conveying stories of movement and ideas of color through seams, lines, and layers.

MARTINA MERLINI | Martina Merlini (Bologna, 1986) is an artist with figurative roots as an illustrator. She currently resides and works in Milan where she also obtained her degree at the European Institute of Design. Her work is known for being in constant evolution. Starting with illustrations, she explored new techniques and materials that are all reflective of her search for a formal balance and geometrical harmony. During last years she developed and perfected her own technique using wax and enamel, trying to define a rawness that reminds the typical casualty of nature, and yet the invisible rules that flow through it. Merlini’s work has been exhibited across Europe and the US.
