This month, as part of Project 12+1’s second year running, Contorno Urbano is showing a mural by Roc Blackblock, a well known Catalan artist who specialises in stenciling; an artistic technique often used in graffiti using paint and one or more stencils cut by the artist. Defining himself as an ‘all terrain’ artist, Roc Blackblock is as comfortable painting on walls as he is on paper, canvas, in digital formats, or even on skin — he also works as an illustrator and tattoo artist. He stands out from many other artists through his engagement with social issues, using art as a means of expression and activism in aid of social struggles, public memory, and community.
The aim of this month’s artistic intervention was to transmit a message to all of us — an invitation to liberate the child within, and to reconnect with the aspects of ourselves that adult life and social pressures have repressed and dulled; spontaneity, creativity, fantasy, and imagination. The character is inspired by a picture of a famous clown. The artwork will be on show until the beginning of March, when it will give way to next month’s intervention, a piece by the artist Elbi Elem.
12+1 is a proposal put forward by Contorno Urbano, a socially minded artistic association: 12 artists, 12 months, one 50 square metre wall, one artistic intervention per month and one final exhibition, presenting each of the artists’ unique work. 12+1 is an open-air art gallery, one which changes each month. A unique vision which problematises the way we exhibit urban art, and the place of these artworks in the city. The project aims to create a space for open dialogue in the city with the highest population density in Europe, in an area which sees over 7000 passers-by each day. You can find the wall at Calle Rosalía de Castro, just opposite the L1 metro exit for Torrassa, in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona.
Contorno Urbano is a cultural association based in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat which aims to properly integrate urban art and graffiti into the cultural life of the city, to spread artistic knowledge, to improve the city’s social fabric and ultimately people’s lives. Contorno Urbano works in collaboration with local institutions, businesses, and cultural mediators. The team has over 10 years’ experience in murals and urban art dissemination, as well as having worked on an international project.
